August. The month of escape. The month dedicated to summer vacation. And, can’t you tell a lot about a person by the type of vacation they take? I started to notice this as I talked with my clients about how they were planning on spending their time away. We have Team Body Within members riding bikes all over the state, canoeing down the Au Sable, hiking the Pictured Rocks, and scaling the Rocky Mountains. All this vacation talk got me thinking about adventure travel and how our fitness can take us to amazing places.
Of course when I think adventure I can hear the National Geographic theme song in my head and I think BIG! If you really want to go on an adventure National Geographic has several expeditions to fulfill even the wildest imagination. Some of the choices include exploring the Polar Region where polar bears, walrus and reindeer can be found. You can kayak in Arctic waters and experience the midnight sun, spouting geysers and massive fjords. If this sounds too cold for your taste you can trek the Amazon and experience bird watching in the jungle’s canopy. Another option is to explore volcanoes in New Zealand along with whale watching. Sounds great, but not all of us have 17 days and 15 grand to spend on summer vacation.
Not to worry. Using these grand tours as inspiration one can find adventure destinations much closer to home. I love Michigan for this reason. There are so many ways to escape and relax. Of course the biggest adventures I can think of are up north across the bridge. Although I have not been fortunate enough to experience the Pictured Rocks, everyone who has visited raves about the natural beauty. The Pictured Rocks offer back packing, biking, day hiking, kayaking and camping. With descriptions like this, how can you not want to see for yourself?
“Towering above Lake Superior are the most prominent of the lakeshore’s geographic and scientific features…These cliffs reach to a height of 200 feet above the lake and extend more than 12 of the 42 miles of shoreline with sand dunes perched atop five square miles of high sand bluffs.” Pictured Rocks Website
Another natural offering of the U.P. are the Tahquamenon Falls. This is a must see during the changing of the leaves in fall. 50,000 gallons of water rush over the lip of the falls every second! A four-mile hike takes visitors from the upper falls to the lowers falls where rowboats can be rented. This provides spectacular, close up views of the five smaller falls. Falls Website
Of course there are so many more reasons to cross the bridge. One of Body Within’s husband and wife teams recently participating in the Ore to Shore ride. This is either a 24 or 48-mile bike ride through Marquette County with Lake Superior as the backdrop.
Another husband and wife team rode in the annual Zoo-de-Mack this past spring. Never heard of it? Read this…
“The bike ride starts at Boyne Highlands Resort and spans 51 miles along Lake Michigan. Riders pedal through rolling countryside and trillium covered forests, along sandy beaches, and are surrounded by breathtaking views of Lake Michigan from 400′ high bluffs. The ride stops approximately half way, at a unique place called the Legs Inn for a leisurely lunch. The ride continues on to Mackinaw City for a huge finish line party at The Crossings and where Arnold Ferry boats have been chartered for the ride over to Mackinac Island.”
This couple had such a great time that Body Within is hoping to organize a team for next year’s ride. And note this is not a race! It is a ride to enjoy the beauty of our great state. Let us know if you are interested.
So, this article only gives a few ideas on adventure travel in our state. Do you have ideas? Have you taken an amazing vacation you’d like to share? Please do! Your comments are welcomed and may serve as the inspiration for us.
This Sunday from noon to 4:00 Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Livingstong county is throwing an ice cream social. The event will take place on the grounds of the McPherson Mansion; 915 North Michigan Avenue in Howell. The menu includes cones, sundaes, floats and slushies from MSU Dairy Store and Hot Dogs from Great Tasting Dogs. Cupcakes and cookies will also be for sale. This sounds like the perfect place for your weekly cheat meal! Even better, it is for a great cause.
This spring Chris and I had a fire at our cottage. It was very scary. We were lucky to have fire extinguishers that we knew how to use. That experience made me realize the importance of knowing what to do when faced with a fire. Please take 30 seconds and watch this public service announcement. It could safe your home and even your life.
Yesterday on facebook I asked if anyone had any helpful hints for me, a new gardener. Several people volunteered to take any excess crops and I did get one email that amazed me. It was all about the cucumber and the various ways it can be used. It truly is a magic bullet that can clean everything from a dirty mouth to the kitchen sink! Here are a few of the uses I found most interesting.
1. Cucumbers are a nutritional powerhouse containing vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. If you need a quick pick-me-up eat a raw cucumber.
2. To prevent slugs or grubs from invading place a few cucumber slices in a small pie tin and leave it in your garden. The chemical reaction between the cucumber and the aluminum will give off a scent that will keep the pests away. Don’t worry though. Humans can’t smell it.
3. Stressed? Cut up an entire cucumber and drop it into boiling water. The steam will be infused with a relaxing aroma.
4. Need to freshen your breath? Take a slice of cucumber and press it against the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds. The phytochemicals will kill the bacteria that is causing the bad breath.
5. Let’s throw the kitchen sink into the mix. Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface of your stainless steel sink. It will remove the tarnish and bring back the shine.
6. Finally, and most interesting to me, to prevent the bathroom mirror from fogging over rub it with a slice of cucumber. Supposedly it will eliminate the fog and create a spa-like aroma.
If you decide to try any of these, please let me know! I will do the same.

The summer was kicked off with some surprising news from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). A study they conducted found very few products with sunscreen worked. When they say very few they mean only 39 out of a possible 1400. What!? Right away this got me thinking. Should I even bother with sunscreen at this point if so few work? I have been using sunscreen for the past decade and avoiding sunburns. The sunscreen I prefer doesn’t make EWG’s recommended list! So what is going on?
First, let’s clarify who is the Environmental Working Group. They are an advocacy group who is trying to force the Food and Drug Administration to act. The FDA has never finalized sun-safety standards and this is something the FDA has been working on for 30 years! Since the FDA has not implemented official rules the EWG contends this has led to misleading claims for sunscreen thus placing consumers at risk. The risk to consumers comes from relying too heavily on sunscreen protection and neglecting other protective measures like seeking shade or covering with clothing and hats. Research has shown that people stay in the sun longer when they use sunscreen particularly if they are wearing a high factor SPF lotion.
This, however, is not the time to stop using sunscreen. Experts still agree sunscreen is necessary, but it needs to be better understood. SPF, or sun protection factor, primarily protects against UVB rays. These rays cause sunburns. UVA rays, which tan the skin, are not included in SPF factors unless you choose a “broad-spectrum” lotion. But know that even broad-spectrum lotions cannot filter all the damaging rays. If you are using a sunscreen and still getting tan your skin is still getting damaged. UVA rays damage the DNA of cells deep in the skin and lead to wrinkles, leathering, sagging, age spots and an increased risk of melanoma. In addition, don’t fall for the lotions that have Vitamin A claiming to slow the signs of aging. This is true in night creams and indoor lotions, but Vitamin A should be avoided in the presence of sunlight.
Now we are getting somewhere. We know to use a broad-spectrum lotion that does not contain vitamin A, but how high of a SPF factor is needed? A lotion that has a SPF factor of 15 will provide protection from 93% of UVB rays. A SPF factor of 50 protects against 98% of UVB rays. SPF factors of 70 or 100 don’t make sense because they simply can’t block 100% of all rays.
SPF factors also help define how long protection can last. For example, I am fair skinned. After about 20 minutes of being in the sun I begin to get red. A SPF 15 lotion will provide 15 times more protection for my skin. Meaning I could stay in the sun for 5 hours without a burn. It is this type of calculation that the EWG is warning against. I should not depend on 5 hours of protection, because sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours and more often if I jump in and out of the water and towel off. Plus, most people don’t use enough. The appropriate amount of lotion is 1 ounce to cover the body. This is a shot glass full of lotion.
So, here is the bottom line. Choose sun protection from the list provided by the EWG. EWG Approved Sunscreens. Apply 1 ounce of a broad-spectrum sunscreen that does not contain Vitamin A 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Then lather up again every 2 hours you stay in the sun.
